Random Thoughts!!

I ‘ve read a lot of shayari…apart from the many favorite isolated shers where i don’t know the origin, i really liked the shayari of Bashir Badr,Ghalib,shakeel Badaayooni,…It’s really amazing how sometimes they are able to create sheer magic by putting in those 2 lines or so the deepest of emotions. It needs much more than than the art of merely skillfully playing with words to create SOMETHING really worthwhile out of NOTHING…well, that’s real poetry for us!!

Let me start by sharing with you some of my favorite lines by Bashir Badr:

Sar jhukaaoge to patthar devta ho jaayega
Itna mat chaaho use woh bewafaa ho jaayega||

Hum bhi dariya haiN,hamen apna hunar maaloom hai
Jis taraf bhi chal padenge raasta ho jaayega||

Kitni saadgi se mujhse zindagi ne keh diya
Tu nahi mera to koi doosraa ho jaayega||

Patthar mujhe kehta hai mera chahne waala
Mai moM hooN usne mujhe chhookar nahi dekha||

Ujaale apni yaadoN ke humaare saath rahne do
Na jaane kis gali meiN zindagi ki shaam ho jaaye||

Khush rahe ya bahut Udaas rahe
Zindagi tere aas-pass rahe||

Years back, i read Shakeel Badaayooni’s 1 small book of ghazals and that’s his only book that i have read till date. And beleive me,it was enough to make me his fan:)

Koi-e-Shakeel dekhe yeh junooN nahi to kya hai
Ki usi ke ho gaye hum jo na ho sakaa humaara||

Here’s a Katy’aa (4-liner!) by him.See if u can understand it:

Jo ek nazar ki jumbish (movement) se har dil ki basti loot gaya
Wo jis se aankhei.n chaar hui.n aur haath se saagar (wine glass) chhoot gaya
Dil uska bhi hai apna bhi,hai farak “shakeel” itna lekin
Wo patthar tha jo saabit hai, ye sheesha tha jo toot gaya!!

Neeraj ki hindi poetry bhi maine zyada nahi padhi hai, but here again it convinces me that there’s that element of depth and substance that i like. I think i need to read more of him!!

Ji haan,”Neeraj” mein bahut dosh hai.n lekin
Muaaf kar do use bachho.n ki khataao.n ki tarah||

Mai samandar tha magar sahraa raha uske liye
woh na jaane kis nazar se dekhta tha dosto||

HINDI MOVIE SONGS are a great source of good poetry. Actually most hit songs have great lyrics, which is another way of saying that they have great poetry within them and great poets behind them!!

Is tarah ashiqui ka asar chhod jaaonga
Tere chehre pe apni nazar chhod jaaoonga||

Thodaa hai, thode ki zaroorat hai
Zindagi fir bhi yahaan khoobsurat hai||

Chhod de saari duniya kisi ke liye
Yeh munaasib nahi aadmi ke liye||
Pyar se bhi zaroor kai kaam hai.N

I really like bashir badr for his simplicity and depth of ideas-often both at the same time. After I saw him on TV as judge in one of the talent shows,sitting next to smglamorous actress (perhaps riya sen?), i only like him more!! Human bias is an essential part of life:)

One of my collegue recently questioned if it waw really a good idea to say things or say them in a way that it makes fun of ur own self or makes u seems like a bechara. I am not sure, but then that’s what “deep” poetry is all about. Its abt rising above such issues of exposing your true self, particualrly your sensitive/ pessimistic side, ur moments of weakness or despair. Sharing moments of sadness was never considered a bad things per se as we all have those low moments once in a while plus they are a part of making us realize the true worth of those good moments that invariably follow them. I feel it naturally when i like-like thousands of others-when some of my most favorite songs happen to be the sad songs by kishore kumar/mukesh. Anyways, we are all learning and refining our opinions daily:)
