English Poetry

Well, I ‘ve not really read much of what one would term as english poetry, but i would share here a few poems or those parts of some poems which wre simple enough for me to understand and i really liked them!! so here it goes…

LEISURE (William Henry Davies)

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN (Robert Frost)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
and looked down one as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
and having perhaps the better claim
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that, the passing there
had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
in leaves no feet had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

SOUND AND SENSE (Alexander Pope)

True ease in writing comes from art, not chance,
As those move easiest who have learned to dance.

SUCCESS IS COUNTED SWEETEST (Emily Dickinson)

Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne’er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.

Not one of all the purple Host
Who took the Flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of Victory

As he defeated – dying -
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!

MORE TO COME…

    It doesn’t interest me…..

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for….
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the center of the sorrow….
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or
have become shriveled and closed from fear or further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain….mine or your own
….without moving to hide it ..or fade it..or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy….mine or your own….
if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning you to be careful,
be realistic or to remember the limitations of being Human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself.
…if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.

I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty every day
and if you can source your life from God’s presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure….yours and mine….
and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon….Yes!

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of great despair,
weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you are….how you came here.
I want to know if you’ll stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and
if you truly like the company you keep….in the empty moments….
